This sad piece has been:
- Mostly rotting since revision 1.3.
- Marked <!-- XXX whoa. this section needs rework --> for 8 years.
- containing <b>If all this seems needlessly complex</b> ... since 1.3
- unsalvageable from the start.
Conclusion: coup de grace was long overdue.
Renumber again since this was so much fun.
