SPLA Takes Control of Key Oil Field
The South Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA) has taken full control of a key oil field after battles with the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF). 12 April 2012 By Luk Riek Nyak BENTIU, 12 April 2012 [Gurtong] – Following the clashes, the Heglig oil field fell into the hands of the South Sudanese army. An eyewitness told the press that the SPLA managed to defeat the SAF despite the Sudanese army’s massive aerial bombardments that spread into Abiemnhom where four people among them two children were reportedly killed. An oil security staff told the press on telephone that the SPLA had pushed the SAF about 30 kilometres further from Heglig. “Many bodies were found on the ground on the SAF side as the SPLA advanced towards Kassana. We also managed to blow the pipeline and what remains is the big power plant that needs engineers from Tharjiath oil field”, added the witness. Following the new development, elated Unity State residents hailed their army for its courage in protecting its territory and its resources. At the same time, the Vice President of the Republic of South Sudan Dr Riek Machar has urged South Sudanese youth to remain steadfast in protecting their territory. He spoke upon arrival in Unity State where he was scheduled to preside over a peace and reconciliation meeting between Unity, Lakes and Warrap states.
