Wau Airport Closure Takes Toll on Mobile Subscribers
The recent closure of Wau Airport in the Western Bahr el Ghazal State capital has immensely hampered services of mobile telephony operators. 12 April 2012 By James Deng Dimo WAU, 11 April 2012 [Gurtong] – The facility’s operations were recently halted following a mishap in which 50 passengers escaped unhurt when a commercial plane crash landed on its way from Juba International Airport. Subscribers of the country’s leading mobile telephone operator, Vivacell, have been most hit, with many unable to access airtime. The Vivacell Western Bahr el Ghazal State coordinator Nyayai Mathok Ring told Gurtong in Wau that alternative means of obtaining airtime was being offered through electronic top up at Vivacell custom office in Wau. She urged the state residents to remain calm as the situation was being looked at, while at the same time asking those in need of new sim cards and those seeking replacement of lost cards to do so. “We have a few recharge cards that we have just received from our Juba office through Aweil Airport in Northern Bahr el Ghazal State. We are serving our subscribers now although we are still experiencing some difficulties while transferring airtime”, said Ring.
