Archbishop Decries Conflicts and Border Clashes

JUBA, April 11, 2012 (CISA) - A Catholic Archbishop in South Sudan has
called to an end the current border clashes between his country and
the Sudan as well as conflicts in the troubled Jonglei State.

In his Easter message to the nation, Archbishop Paolino Loro Lukudu of
Juba Archdiocese said such happenings did not augur well with God’s
intention of Easter to His people.

“The fact that such happenings have taken place within the forty days
of Easter period does not augur well with our Christian faith,” he
said.

“The killings and displacements of the people from the troubled
Jonglei State, clashes at our borders and the closure of Juba
University, are all issues of great concern to us as Shepherds of
God’s flock,” emphasized the Archbishop.

Easter, he reminded them, was the time and the chance to rise up from
the dead and from problems, emphasizing that troubles in South Sudan
were its own Lent.

“People should look at the reasons behind the problems affecting the
country and respect the truth about them. Politics should not bless
what is wrong,” he pointed out.

He urged the Christians rise above their problems as they celebrated
the resurrection of Jesus.

Meanwhile Presidential Committee for Peace, Reconciliation and
Tolerance on Jonglei State chaired by Archbishop Daniel Deng Bul, held
a workshop in Bor from April 2-4.

The workshop attracted members of Parliament of Jonglei State,
representatives of the Sudan Council of Churches, the South Sudan
Peace and Reconciliation Commission, the Jonglei State Peace
Commission, civil society groups and UN agencies.

In a statement issued at the end of the workshop and signed by
Archbishop Bul, the Committee said, “We appeal to all to speak the
language of peace, reconciliation and tolerance, particularly our
diaspora and intellectuals.”

“We must all accept responsibility for what we say and what we do, to
give peace a chance in Jonglei and the whole of South Sudan,”
emphasized the Committee in its statement.
