South Kordofan humanitarian situation deteriorates Sudan Radio Service Umdorein, 16/05/12 - Reports coming from Umdorein county in South Kordofan State indicate that humanitarian situation in the area is severely deteriorating. Meanwhile, the Government of Sudan continues to deny access to humanitarian organization to reach the victims of the conflict alleging that the organization will support the SPLM/N. Despite increased efforts by the international community to gain access to South Kordofan, little progress has been made. A woman living in Umdorein county in the state describes the humanitarian challenges facing the area to Sudan Radio Service: “Believe me the situation here is extremely bad. First of all for the pregnant women there is no hospital near here. Within this month we have a number of them who died while giving birth due to lack of a health Centre. Some women give birth to twins and die on the spot. Two days ago we had a woman who gave birth to twins. She was referred to Kauda, one child died and we were told the other one is alive. On the side of water it’s a problem two days ago people were sleeping out to get just one jerry can of water.” UNCHR has estimated that there are now 185,000 refugees from South Kordofan and Blue Nile in South Sudan and Ethiopia. Many others are internally displaced and in desperate need of urgent humanitarian assistance.
