The government of South Sudan on Friday welcomed the decision by the
UN Security Council to extend the mandate of UN forces in Abyei.

The Minister of Information and government spokesperson, Barnaba
Marial Benjamin says the six months extension announced by the
Security Council on Thursday is a good initiative, but is not enough.

"The extension is very much welcome by the Republic of the Government
of South Sudan. But we would have loved that their number should have
been increased that is the first thing".

Marial told Radio Miraya that the UN Security Council should have put
more pressure on Sudan to withdraw its troops from Abyei as stated in
a previous UN resolution.

Marial also said the council should have considered effecting Chapter
7 of the UN charter which calls for the use of military action against
any country that displays acts of aggression against a UN member
state.

"Then their mandate should be robust according to the Chapter Seven of
the UN system. Also we expected the Security Council to ask why the
Sudanese Armed Forces are still in Abyei".

"We have moved out our police and now the fifteenth deadline has
passed and yet we are still seeing that Republic of Sudan has not
moved its forces from Abyei area."

Marial has also accused the African Union of dragging its feet on
organizing the resumption of negotiations in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia as
stated in a peace road map.

"We would like to register our protest. We expected that African Union
Roadmap on the resolution of the conflict should have started. The
President of the Republic of South Sudan has appointed his negotiating
team," he said.

"Now the African Union is dragging its feet, is breaking its time
simply because Sudan has not responded to them. I thought they had set
a roadmap and they put a deadline. Why have they not fixed a date?"
