Wednesday 18th July is former South African President Nelson Mandela's
94th birthday.

In Soweto in South Africa, schoolchildren took to the streets to
celebrate the birth of the man who liberated the country from
apartheid rule.

The day was officially declared as Mandela Day by the United Nations
in 2009 in recognition of the achievements of the former South African
President in working towards conflict resolution, democracy, human
rights, peace, and reconciliation.

As part of this year's activities, millions of people around the world
are asked to dedicate 67 minutes of their day to community work and
projects for the needy to mark Mandela's 67 years in active politics.
