Authorities to End Conflict over Parking Fees
The Authorities in Morobo County are working to end a conflict over revenue collection from the Parking Yard at the Kaya Port customs. 13 November 2012 By Petia Suliman Loro MOROBO, 13 November 2012 [Gurtong] – Morobo County Commissioner Moses Simon Soro said that the meeting with the Director of Customs and Excise at Kaya Port is to resolve the issue of the parking yard that was taken by Custom authorities early this year. They tentatively agreed to hear from the Director General of Customs in Juba on how to share the daily collections of parking fees currently being taken by the Customs authority. The Commissioner said that, the collections for all the vehicles parked should be shared by all stakeholders listed to enhance development in the area. “Our overall interest is to work for a better South Sudan and all government organs must work as a team to resolve the problems that face this nation together,” he said. The Kaya Customs Director Wilson Bodo said that currently revenue collection is centralized and he agreed to consult with his Director General for a way forward. The Acting Deputy County Director Juma Mark revealed that the parking yard was taken by the National Revenue Authority without any written documentation in May and has since then caused the county a huge financial burden. Parking in the county is the main revenue generating activity and collections can range from 10,000 SSP or more monthly and currently it could have dropped due to the poor state of the Kaya-Yei road. In October the state government threatened to pull out from the centralized tax system as the centralized system would make the state handicapped and could not render services to its people.
