TORIT, 19 April 2013 [Gurtong]– Hiroko made the remark on Thursday
while speaking at the commemoration function of the International
Women’s Day in Torit.

The UNMISS leader said the day was a vital opportunity for her to join
the people of EES in the historic commemoration of the belated women’s
day in the state.
“We must recognize that empowerment of women is an essential tool for
advancing national development and reducing poverty,” she said.

“This empowerment seeks to provide women with the opportunity to
participate fully in the society on equal terms with their male
counterparts. The theme for this year’s Women’s day, ‘The Gender
Agenda: Gaining Momentum,’ was chosen with this in mind,” she added.

She said realization of the full participation and empowerment of
women creates an environment where both men and women share the
responsibilities and equally enjoy the dividends of peace to achieve
lasting development.

“Today’s cerebration also provides opportunity for all of us to think
and address the issues and social practices disadvantaging girls and
women such as denial of education for girl child, early girl
marriages, girl child compensation and other forms of violence.”

In order to achieve equality, she called for cooperation from both men
and women with an aim to achieving good work relations to enhance
development.

The UNMISS State coordinator said the mission is doing it’s very best
to lay the foundation for development in the new nation.

“We as UNMISS are trying our best to bring the seedling of development
here together with the Government of Eastern Equatoria. But it takes
all of us, women and men’s effort to nourish and raise the seedling of
development,” she urged.
She assured the State authorities and the entire citizens of the
continuity of UNMISS in working with the people and the state
government.
