The Northern Bahr el Ghazal State Governor Paul Malong Awan has said that the state is now generally stable in spite of the threats posed by the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) in December 2012. 18 May 2013 The Northern Bahr el Ghazal State Governor Paul Malong Awan during the regional conference in Wau. [James Deng Dimo] By James Deng Dimo WAU, 18 May 2013 [Gurtong] - “People are mostly busy with everyday activities of their very lives, the peaceful co-existence in the State which is a partial theme of the conference is an inborn substance towering personal ambitions, we believe that it is a visionary government because it is led by the people that constitute the government in the first place,” Awan told the greater Bahr el Ghazal Regional Conference in Wau. Geographically, the state borders South Darfur and South Kordofan to the North, Warrap to the East and Western Bahr el Ghazal State to the South west. Majority of people practice pastro-agrarian system of subsistence with bee keeping and hunting mostly practiced in the area of Aweil Centre County. He said that there has never been an incident where a report is brought because of the social and tradition problems that exist among the people of our Region since the advent of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA). The governor said the only skirmishes that happened in Northern Bahr el Ghazal State during his tenure was a border war between South Kordofan and South Darfur on one hand and the people and government of NBGS on the other. “The main Security threat of NBGs is mostly from the Republic of the Sudan. In recent months, attempts have been made even from the individuals we know to conquer the land of South Sudan through NBGS. This is a long history and tradition of looking down on the people of the South as wretched and worthy of servitude. I am happy that the people of the country have defied the stereotyped and voted overwhelmingly for the separate country exercised through an internationally recognized Referendum,” he said. He said that in December 2012, Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) with the allied militias tried to capture Kiir Adem to make it as their front base but that was thwarted by the gallant forces of the SPLA. “This is the same situation in Southern Kordofan state who attempted a similar episode in the same month were they underwent a humiliating and unforgettable defeat,” he said. He said that the announcement by Sudan President Omar al-Bashir that business must resume on normal scale between the two countries must be received with care because President Bashir’s decrees and directives are sometime not adhered to. He said that that SAF uses cattle keepers as an advance team to provoke and confuse an already suspicious relationship between the North and the South. He said that the Government of Northern Bahr el Ghazal had embarked on a sensitization program for the citizens to own the government not the other way round. “People must have confidence in own government especially the one they elected to power. This is a binding social contract on which the people must put the government to task in regards to the delivery of basic services,” he said. He urged the people of the greater Bahr El Ghazal Region to agree on priorities geared toward attaining the aspirations of the people.
