JUBA, 18 May 2013 (Gurtong) – Makuriric residents reported that the
child was alive and the Lakes State Criminal Investigation Department
(CID) had launched a search operation where they managed to capture
the young mother.

Senior CID security officer who requested anonymity said that they
collaborated with the community to capture the mother.

He explained that the girl was suspected to have been impregnated by
an elderly man but her parents were not aware until a family member
heard baby sounds inside the latrine and police was called for
investigation.

Unofficial marriages are not allowed in Rumbek.

The communities get their wealth by marrying off girls to receive
hundreds of cattle paid as dowry.

If a person impregnated the girl outside official marriage, the two
communities launch a fight against causing trouble for authorities.

Several suspected young men are arrested in Rumbek main correctional
prison services charged for murders related to girl pregnancy outside
official marriage.

Some are charged for murder cases related to cattle raiding and cattle
thieves as well revenge killing long side inter-communal violence.
