Authorities Increase Crackdown On Bars In Rumbek
South Sudanese Security forces comprising of the police and national security services have increased crackdown on suspected places selling alcoholic drinks in Rumbek Central Market and bars around Rumbek Central County. 22 May 2013 By Gabriel Mayom JUBA, May 22, 2013 (Gurtong) - The decision for closing bars selling wines, beers and local brewed alcoholic drinks was announced by Lakes State’s Caretaker Governor Maj-Gen. Matur Chut Dhuol recently. Dhuol also ordered for arrest on sight of anyone found drinking either in town or in the cattle camps. The decision of banning alcoholic drinks was objected by widows who are raising their children and paying school fees through this business. The ban according to some residents deprives citizens, mostly women of their daily income source. A member of South Sudan’s National Parliament disagreed with security forces imposing the order of banning alcoholic consumption, terming it as unlawful and a threat to widows and vulnerable people in the rural areas. Hon. Daniel Deng Monydit, who also owns bars in Naivasha and Canal argued with the security officials and expelled them from his bars as he asked the security officers for a written order to effect their operations. “Please go back to your master and bring me that document forbidding the selling of alcoholic drinks. Tell me, which chapter in constitution bans alcoholic drinks?” Deng asked. “It is a national duty of state government to protect civilians and to provide equal security to all and nothing in the law bans entire alcohol selling,” the MP added. A senior security officer speaking to Gurtong on condition of anonymity said: “We are just imposing what is said by the caretaker governor. This MP overwhelmed us quoting law which we are not aware of.” “I told my forces to withhold searching of the MP’s bars but we will continue to impose this order as declared by the governor,” he added. A resident in Rumbek market said the widows, and single mothers whose wines and beer businesses are again destroyed have been crying since morning. He added that several bars were searched and many men and women were arrested and taken to a remote secret prison. In Yirol West County, the local authorities destroyed beers in the market without compensation. The public beer destruction was done in Yirol West County Freedom Square as an instruction from the county commissioner, Colonel Majak Ruei, who was imposing the order of the Caretaker Governor Maj-Gen Matur.
