President Obama Concludes Africa Trip

On July 2, President Obama concluded his second sub-Saharan Africa
trip, touring Senegal, South Africa, and Tanzania. His agenda focused
on promoting trade and investment as means of creating economic growth
and stability for African nations.

President Obama follows in the footsteps of his predecessors with
his trip to Africa, signaling his administration's commitment to
growing US-African relations and strengthening opportunities for U.S.
private sector investment.

His trip kicked off on June 26, with a formal ceremony in Dakar,
Senegal and a press conference with Senegalese president Macky Sall.
President Obama praised Senegal, stating, "I’m told there’s a word
here -- disso -- which reflects the desire of Senegalese to resolve
disagreements through dialogue and not conflict. Senegal has never
suffered a military coup. There are free and fair elections, repeated
transfers of power -- peacefully -- a vibrant civil society, a strong
press, and dozens of political parties."

The president described his time on the island as "powerful" and
that it was a reminder that, “we have to remain vigilant when it comes
to the defense of people’s human rights — because I’m a firm believer
that humanity is fundamentally good, but it’s only good when good
people stand up for what’s right. And this is a testament to when
we’re not vigilant in defense of what’s right, what can happen.”

In a press conference , President Zuma responded to President
Obama's statements about his desire to build an economic relationship
with South Africa. He stated, "The stage is now set for a lot of work
to be done to further deepen our bilateral relations and also to
promote democracy, peace and development on the continent."
