Juba University lecturers threaten to strike as gov’t averts the situation
------------------------------ October 5, 2013 (JUBA) – South Sudan’s ministry of higher education, science and technology has appealed to the university administration in Juba to give it time to address the lecturers’ concerns that led to the threat to strike on Monday next week. *University of Juba (File photo )* University of Juba on Friday announced that its lecturers were planning to strike beginning on Monday due to poor allowance policy and less salary pay. The lecturers in the higher learning institution deplored the situation in which their salary structure falls far below the expectations, coupled with poor conditions for accommodation and other necessities. However the newly appointed minister for higher education, John Gai Yoh, on Saturday said the situation will be rectified and appealed to the lecturers to give his institutions two weeks to address their concerns. Some receive as less as $400 a month, equivalent to a salary of a graduate in the civil service. Gai in a statement on Saturday said he had already met with the country’s president, Salva Kiir Mayardit, and discussed the concerns. The president, he said, had already directed the minister of finance and economic planning to review the allowance policy for the lecturers by January 2014. It is not yet clear whether the planned strike will go ahead or cancelled on Monday as university administration was not available for comment. Meanwhile teachers in general education on Saturday marked the world’s teachers’ day in Juba, demanding better services including accommodation, study tours and better salary for the teachers across the country.
