Pia gave these remarks during a meeting held in his office with UNMISS human rights officers Pillar Westa and Guy Merline Njike to discuss the formation of Human Rights clubs in the secondary schools. Pilar Westa stated that they have already formed four human rights clubs in four different schools in Yambio County and that human rights is the responsibility of everyone as they have laid strategic plans to carry massive campaigns and sensitize the community about human rights through media because there is misinterpretation from the community about human rights and there is great need to make more clarification. Meanwhile, Guy Merline Njike noticed that there is challenge of child abuse such as rape, early pregnancy, gender-based violence and forced marriage and rape cases are alarming which need immediate intervention and good cooperation to rescue the situation before it worsens. Guy said he was impressed when he visited Yangiri Primary School and found that the school has 67 pupils and 50 were girls. He added that there is need to support these girls so that they can be able to continue with their education and finish successfully. In response, Pia said in the state respects human rights but he is concerned with the content of the human rights as human rights should go together with responsibility because in Africa people depend much on children for their survival. “Children should not misunderstand the meaning of the human rights and there is need for massive community awareness so that parents should understand the meaning of the human rights,” said Pia. He added that they have not received any report concerning rape cases from any County in the State and there is need for the County authority to cooperate to report such case as rape so that the culprit can be brought to justice.
