Opposition Leader Appeals For Quick Relief Assistance The Leader of Minority Group in the National Legislative Assembly also a member of the Sudan People's Liberation Movement for Democratic Change (SPLM-DC), has urged Crisis Management Committee (CMC) to quickly deliver relief services to the affected states. 31 January 2014 By Jok P Mayom
*JUBA, 31 January 2014 [Gurtong] *- Hon. Onyoti Adigo lashed at the CMC for visiting states not affected by the political crisis (Bahr el Ghazal states) instead of the Greater Upper Nile States of Jonglei, Unity and Upper Nile which have been the most affected. "The situation is so horrible there," Hon. Adigo said. "Nobody went to Malakal up to now since the crisis management teams were formed. The civilians are in dire need of services in Bor, Bentiu and Malakal now." Adigo said most of the civilians displaced are women, children and elderly people who could not get access to basic needs, food, clean water and the sanitary facilities. He said there were no relief organizations and government agencies to help the civilians in the war affected areas like in Malakal which he visited recently. The legislator urged the government of South Sudan and humanitarian agencies to rescue the displaced civilians' situation. He thanked humanitarian actors who have gone to the areas to assess the situations so that relief assistance could be expeditiously distributed to the thousands in need. In Upper Nile alone, according to the Chollo Intellectual Committee (CIC), a total of 305, 000 people have been internally displaced in the counties of Manyo, Fashoda, Makal, Malakal Town and Panyikano. The CIC chairperson Prof. Joshua Otor appealed for provision of security to Malakal town so that the displaced civilians could return. "It is very hard for them to come back to town when the situations are bad," said Prof. Otor. "The displaced communities have been kept silent without any concern." Prof. Otor said that there is need to add counseling to the basic needs for both the civilians and the SPLA government soldiers. "Soldiers need to be counseled and oriented so that they avoid the random shooting in the town since the town capitals are now normal," he advised. Saneta Angelo Gwang, an eye witness who visited the IDPs in Malakal described the situation as: "The Town is now made as Ghost town because all the houses, main Malakal market are burned down including the government offices."
