*TORIT, 06 February 2014 [Gurtong] -* Lobong made the appeal while speaking
at the reopening of the state Legislative Assembly in state capital, Torit.

He told the Assembly his state has recorded an alarming number of the IDPs
who fled the deadly conflict particularly in Jonglei, Upper Nile and Unity
states following the foiled "coup attempt" on 15 December 2013.

He said the vulnerable IDPs in the state urgently need humanitarian
assistance from aid agencies to rescue and normalize their conditions,
saying the state alone can't do anything fruitful.

Earlier, the Chairperson of the State Humanitarian Sub-Committee under the
Crisis Management Committee Paska Hifta Oduho disclosed humanitarian
agencies had shown commitment and readiness to assist the IDPs.

Hon. Hifita, also the state Gender, Culture and Social Development Minister
said non-governmental partners have helped in the areas of Water,
Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH), food and non-food assistance.

Since the political unrest broke out mid-last month, thousands of people
have been displaced within and without. Those in camps and UN bases are in
dire need of humanitarian aid.

As part of positive responses, late last month, at least 35,000 IDPs in
Nimule of Eastern Equatoria State's Mgawi County benefited from emergency
food assistance, through Plan International, one of the Humanitarian
Agencies operating in the state.
