Citizens happy about reopening of Ruweng-Abyei road

ABYEI/ABIEMNHOM (25 Jan.)

Citizens in Rummamer and Abiemnhom Counties said they are happy about the
reopening of the Abiemnhom-Rummamer road.

Traders and drivers told Abyei Today that they are very happy about the
move because the route has a history of being a lifeline connecting the
Upper Nile and Abyei regions, saying the road was neglected during war time
and ended up covered with trees.

In December 2016, the route was revived by mutual cooperation between the
two governments. Ruweng state contributed heavy vehicles to remove trees
and carry out road levelling, while the Abyei administration supported the
operation with fuel.

Some people said the reopening of the road will breathe life into villages
along the road, saying the road will strengthen commercial and social
ties. The official opening ceremony was attended by government officials and
traditional leaders from Abyei and Ruweng state as well as villagers.

Peter Dau, political advisor of Ruweng governor, said the security
situation would be jointly provided by the administrations. He called on
the commissioners of Rummamer and Abiemnhom west to establish tax points at
each site to encourage movement.

Meanwhile, Gordon Mawec Malau, a county commissioner from northern Liech
state, called on local residents in neighbouring areas to treat passing
people politely.
