South Sudan rivals trade accusations over fighting in Upper Nile

UPPER NILE (5 Feb.)

South Sudan's government and rebel forces have traded accusations of fresh
attacks on various areas in Upper Nile from Thursday until Friday.

SPLA-IO Military Spokesman William Gatjiath Deng told Radio Tamazuj on
Friday that their positions at Gabat area came under assault by government
troops on Thursday afternoon but they were repulsed, saying clashes
continued untill Friday.Gatjiath claimed that they also calshed with
government forces in Ditang and its surrounding areas on Friday."The
government forces went and attacked our forces in Ditang and areas around
Ditang, so we clashed in the morning, "said Gatjiath.

For his part, Santo Domic, Deputy Spokesman of the SPLA army, said there
were clashes in Gabat and Ditang areas over the past six days, but the
attackers were repulsed."There were skirmishes in Ditang, Gabat and Kombo
Al Haj areas over the past six days, but the rebels were repulsed,so ther
are no rebels in those areas,"said Domic.

Radio Tamazuj could not independently verify these claims.
