11 February 2017 Alfred Sebit Lokuji (on social media) Dreaming of Change and an Inclusive Federal Democratic Republic of South Sudan I begin with the dictum that one spoiled apple spoils the basket. Except that in this particular case, the “basket” is far from being spoiled – only a few prominent apples are spoiled and continue freely to spoil the name of the rest. I have travelled in Jieng land: Bor, Panyagor, Padak, Pariang, Turalei, Agok, Marial Bai, Rumbek, Yirol, Cueibet, and other small places I cannot recall! The ordinary people there were never hostile, in fact, very friendly, welcoming and accommodating. And I emphatically doubt that the germ being sown by the JCE is of their making. Now, most South Sudanese who judge the Jieng by those who trace their origins to the Jieng and are in control of the government in Juba, do not make the distinction between the vast majority of Jieng who are innocent, not criminal and do not benefit from the massive corruption that characterize the regime in Juba, from those who have literally bankrupt South Sudan of nationalism and continue to rape its resources – cash or raw oil and other less visible goods of South Sudan. Now the JCE regime has overseen the collapse of banking along with the South Sudanese pound, let alone all angles of human rights. Furthermore, now fuel is also being controlled from the centre (and I would love to dismiss the rumour that fuel finds its way back to Uganda where it is sold!) The country is being run down at high pace. I do not advocate for innocent people to expose themselves to wanton slaughter by the JCE forces – but in their heart of hearts, it is high time that all citizens of South Sudan, who believe in a South Sudan nation, and are confident of a future modern state in South Sudan, should resolutely distance themselves from the murderers in Juba who wilfully and grossly lied when they took an oath to protect the citizens and constitution of the Republic of South Sudan. I am a Bari and an Equatorian by birth – but I make a conscious decision that my number one identity is “South Sudanese” – an identity I must allow others to claim and hold. Change is looming – victims and perpetrators alike know this! Victims smile when they realize this. Perpetrators panic and go on a killing spree, is if the rivers of blood they produce could wash away their guilt. My dream is to arrive at the day when all South Sudanese nationalists, including the vast majority of innocent Jieng, will welcome change – and together, we can attempt once more seriously, intelligently, collectively, and with determination begin to build the South Sudan nation that we have dreamed about for all these years. Factional fighting will not solve the problem but a united stand.
