NYAMLEL, 15 February 2017 [Gurtong]-

This is the first community conference between the two communities to be
held in 2017 under the theme ‘Maintaining Peaceful Migration Season and
Cross Border Relationship by Solving Issues Through Dialogue.’.

The conference was also jointly held in consultation with Dinka Malual
Chiefs of Nyamlel who have several annual Pre-migration peace conferences
before.

The three days Pre-Migration Conference discussed how the Rezeigat cattle
will be grazed in the territory of South Sudan and how both communities
will respect each other in the wake for peace. The conference was
facilitated by William Kolong Pioth, the Coordinator for South Sudan Peace
and Reconciliation Commission, joint border peace committee members, local
government officials and other community leaders, who helped in reviewing
previous resolutions, reflect on the lessons learned from last year’s
migration.

The conference resolved pending cases that have the potential of escalating
tensions where the communities eventually agreed on the set resolutions and
adopted new resolutions covering all the different aspects of 2017-18 dry
season cattle migration.

Operational and technical support for the event was provided by VISTAS –
USAID program which aims to increase stability along the Sudan-South Sudan
border by re-affirming the positive social, economic and political linkages
forged between Dinka Malual of NBeG and the pastoralist Rezeigat of East
Darfur during peaceful cattle migrations.

Each dry season (January – June) thousands of Rezeigat cattle along with
pastoralist families cross River Kiir into Aweil North, Aweil West and
Aweil Center Counties in search of water and pastures.

USAID has been supporting these meetings since 2012.
