Save the Children’s Country Director Mr. Peter Walsh who delivered his
speech at the opening ceremony of the workshop to develop a national
roadmap on ending child marriage in the country as requested by the
government, told the audience that his was pleased to announce that its
management will continue to support the initiative. He said that last year
they launched the national campaign entitled 'Girls are Children which is
part of our wider global campaign Every Last Child'.

"We campaign to end child marriage, ensure fair financing for children and
to ensure violence against girls is no longer tolerated.""Today is a great
opportunity for the government, civil society, the private sector and the
international community to unite in purpose and protect South Sudanese
girls," Mr. Walsh expressed.

He argued that the need to end child marriage cannot be overemphasized. The
Director said that according to the new analysis, globally one girl under
15 is married every seven seconds; this reveals the scale of the threat
posed by child marriage to education, health and children’s safety.

He further noted that child marriage starts a cycle of disadvantage that
denies girls the most basic rights to learn, develop and be
children.Calling for political will, the leader said that the children of
South Sudan have spoken openly of the need to end child marriage and to
give them the opportunity to continue with their education and considering
that their mandate as the Save the Children is to be the voice of children.
