Rebecca Garang rejects foreign intervention, calls on Kiir to step down

U.S. (23 Feb.)

Rebecca Garang de Mabior, the widow of SPLM founder John Garang, rejected
calls that South Sudan should go under international trusteeship if the
warring parties do not make peace, while calling on President Salva Kiir to
step down.

In an interview with Radio Tamazuj on Wednesday, Rebecca Garang, who is on
a visit to the United States of America, rejected the allegations that she
has been leading a campaign for an international intervention in South
Sudan.

According to Rebecca, the international intervention in South Sudan if
implemented, citizens will live like slaves in their own country. “I want
the people of South Sudan to listen to me, I am Mama Rebecca, I don’t call
for international trusteeship, the international trusteeship will make us
live like slaves once again,” she said.

Rebecca called on President Kiir to step down and give the people of South
Sudan a chance to elect a new leader who will bring about peace and
stability in the country. The widow of SPLM founder urged the international
community and regional partners to bring peace to the people of South Sudan
and put pressure on President Kiir to step down.

Pagan Amum, former Secretary General of the ruling Sudan People’s
Liberation Movement (SPLM), has been lobbying for international trusteeship
to be imposed on South Sudan as the only way to restore peace and stability
in the world’s youngest nation.
