lib3ds works quite well.  But it is in c, so you'd
need to wrap it.  http://lib3ds.sourceforge.net/


I've done a milkshape loader, and almost finished a
quake2(md2) loader in python.  Should get some more
done on the quake2 one tonight.

Good thing about milkshape is that it can
import/export heaps of formats.
