Arggg. Gentoo has pyrex 0.8.2 as the current version. I didn't even think to look at that since it was "compiling" before. I guess all the c files were up to date and it really was never compiling the pyrex files after all.
In case you need a 0.9 ebuild, just copy pyrex-0.8.2.ebuild to pyrex-0.9.ebuild (maybe move it to your PORTDIR_OVERLAY so that it stays after next emerge rsync).
It should work fine, pyrex installation is very straightforward.
