I had read about a wrapper.ping.timeout you could adjust for cases
like
this, but couldn't find where the config file should be for that.
This
is also running under vmware so might not be as fast as a normal
machine. We would like to test this before rolling it into
production.
Any ideas ?

Since you can't login to the web UI, i would check the tomcat logs in
/var/log/tomcat5/catalina.out to see if there are any more errors
there.
