More investigation finds:
in ks-rhn-post.log, there is:
Can't open /etc/sysconfig/rhn/*: No such file or directory.
/tmp/ks-script-cENH2B: line 127: rhnreg_ks: command not found
/tmp/ks-script-cENH2B: line 133: rhn_check: command not found
