Actually I was thinking more the other way around at least initially It would be fairly easy for me to write a tool which queries the spacewalk API and generates Nagios configurations using a config.d type methodology. I was also thinking that some of the config information like usernames, passwords, and database names required for the mysql probes for example could initially be stored as custom keys but there are some problems with that for example it would be nice to have a structure for group keys similar to how the config groups work. Im also not wild about storing things like passwords in fields where they can be viewed.
Now my scripts may not be the permanent ones used for the project because I will be writing it in Perl because Python and Java aren't languages I normally program in but they will be usable, and should be a good proof of concept for how things should be done in the permanent implementation. Right now I have 1 other project (the HadrianWall firewall project initial beta release of the iptables-manager tool ) which has higher priority because I need it in my production environment ASAP, but should be able to shift my focus to getting this project started some time next month.
