Sorry about that, you guys are correct; Outlook converted my double-dash to its 
single longdash before I changed to Plain Text email.  I usually have the 
reflex of ctrl-Z right when I see it happen, but I must have missed it that 
time!

So yes, it really was "--permanent", so I don't think that's the issue.  Thanks!
