works fine for me now:
make clean
perl Makefile.PL PREFIX=~/sausr SYSCONFDIR=~/saetc
make
make install
PATH=~/sausr/bin:$PATH
spamd -D -p 48383 &
./spamc/spamc -d localhost -p 48383 < sample-nonspam.txt
all works as you would expect. note the "make clean" step; if you "make" and
then rerun Makefile.PL with new PREFIX and SYSCONFDIR, it may not rebuild the
spamassassin and spamd scripts!
