of course the answer isn't surprising to me:
/usr/lib/perl5/5.6.1/i386-linux/auto/DB_File/DB_File.so: libpthread.so.0
=> /lib/tls/libpthread.so.0
(0x40206000)
which seems to be because libdb is linked against pthread:
libpthread.so.0 => /lib/tls/libpthread.so.0 (0x400cd000)
