I'm on some lists where, to accomplish this, you're supposed to subscribe and then change your settings to a kind of "vacation mode" where you don't actually receive anything. The other objection to a closed list I've seen is that one might post from multiple addresses, not just the subscribed one. This should only be a problem if your post goes through a server that rewrites From lines.
