I did the make/ make install for SA 2.53 and everything looks fine at that point.
I then do the test "spamassassin -t [PATH TO]sample-nonspam.txt OR sample-spam.txt and nothing happens - forever.
I have another live computer running SA 2.31 and spamassassin works fine as do both of these tests.
After the hanging on the new box I figured I should rule out the possibility of just a bad tar file (although this is highly unlikely) so I grabbed SA 2.55. Ran all the make stuff and it all went fine without any problems. I then went to run the same test with the spamassassin -t and the exact same hanging behaviour takes place.
What could cause SA to hang like this with such a bare bones test?
My guess is an RBL failure, and some kind of bug in the RBL timeout code.. (there was a bug somewhere in the 2.5x series, not sure if it affects 2.53). So you could also try adding -L to the command line to force it to only run local tests.. That would quickly narrow down if it's something network based, or something config based.
You can also Try adding -D (just make sure -D is the last parameter.. ie: -tD not -Dt)... the last few lines of debug output should tell you what SA is up to when it wedges..
