Answering my own post:

Look at the logs dummy!

Sep 12 16:21:07 alpha spamd[27585]: razor2 check skipped: Illegal seek 
Insecure dependency in connect while running setuid at 
/usr/lib/perl5/5.8.0/i386-linux-thread-multi/IO/Socket.pm line 114, <GEN6> 
line 31.

Not sure what that is all about, but when I disabled razor2 lookups, the 
problem ended.
