On the assumption that the kmail filter was picking up the string BAYES in the X-Spam-Status header, I changed the rule to this:
X-Spam-Status contains Yes, hits=

Can I rely on the changed rule or should I use some other rule instead?

I had this problem too and realized that, when SpamAssassin finds spam, it inserts an "X-Spam-Flag: Yes" header, so I started filtering that rather than X-Spam-Status. I have a default install, so I don't think the extra X-Spam-Flag header is anything special with my setup. It may be better to filter spam based on that header (it works for me).
