By "manually killing" do you mean "kill -9"? If so, yeah, that'll happen.

I just did a kill <pid> not a -9

Just sending an INT or TERM will work. :)

BTW: 20550 is a bit out of date.  I'd upgrade at least to pre2
(22000-something), if not just grabbing SVN head.

I did upgrade just after posting. I'd staed away from pre1 because I was told there were some problems, but pre2 has been fine.
