Well, I can only really answer the first...yes...ATT.net's admins screwed 
up, somehow, and need to fix the server in question.  The DNS for the 
server in question is just fine, but the system, itself, should be 
HELO'ing with a name, not an IP.

As to the second, maybe the spam was one of those (nearly) blank ones, so 
there wasn't really a body to attach?
