Yes, that sounds like it. I don't speak python, but a patch would be appreciated. It appears to die at a hex value of 7F7F in the message.
I tried to test by replacing those with something else, but don't have a tool to do it with... Know of a search and replace for hex? Or a perl expression that will do it?

(Although I don't use sb_mboxtrain, so can't be sure).
If you agree, then you could either create a patch for this yourself, or add a comment to the tracker encouraging Skip to do so (since he indicated (some time ago) that he might).
