I have write permission on my temp dir [...], but I don't know where this _pop3proxyham.mbox file is being written (or read..?). It's written in the current working directory. Where that might be for you, I'm not sure. You can probably set the shortcut that starts SpamBayes to change the CWD to somewhere else (like the temp folder) and that should fix the problem. Indeed, the shortcut that starts sb_tray.exe was not set to use a specific working directory.  I set the CWD to my temp directory, and now it works like a charm.
