If you use Microsoft Outlook, then you can use the Outlook plug-in, which doesn't use the proxy (it relies on Outlook telling the plug-in that there is new mail, and uses the Outlook interface to process the mail). If you use IMAP, then you use the IMAP filter, which periodically runs through the IMAP account and processes any new mail.
