as I could, and never found any file or directory marked 1.1a6.
As I mentioned above, the files with the updated version number are yet
to be checked in, so you will not find them in SVN.
I'm sure to someone who uses it regularly, it must make a lot of
sense. But for someone who doesn't, it's not a very user-friendly system.

It is a source control system - if you can't work out how to use a
source control system you probably should avoid trying to work with a
source release and stick to the binary releases.
Did you try the binary?
