You sound like me when I first wondered about the many Spams I were getting
at one time and what to do about it

One needs to be a fair bit security conscious with who you allow access to
your *REAL* email addresses

Make sure your browser is not giving it out? Check it here
 http://www.privacy.net/analyze/

In newsgroups I suggest you use a email address that uses either RSS or
ORBS. Bigfoot (for instance) allows you to relay a free email account to
another email address (bigfoot uses ORBS to protect you a fair bit against
spammers)

Its good to include the word SpamCop in your email address as many "bots"
drop (filter it out) it when searching newsgroups for email addresses to
gather

I would then relay this to a well setup Hotmail account, such as (e.g.)
23bRuCe_23_SpamCop_@hotma**.*** , making sure that the "adding to directory"
feature is turned *OFF* (this is just for a Newsgroup email address, which is
the hardest test). Maybe also with the *BCC filter, turned ON*

You can then judge how effective you can be at shielding yourself from
spammers. If you come up with better ideas, let people know, such as by
posting to SpamCop's newsgroups

Learn to be more aggressive than SpamCop (SpamCop err's on the side of
caution). So learn a bit about reading headers. Use SpamCop as a Tool to help
and learn, For instance Spamcop will give you an idea as to the number of
reports sent out in last 7 day's to an address (so be careful about
confirming real email addresses).

This should help indicate the colour of a sites hat (white or Black) by the
volume of reports, ratio 'ed to the size of the provider. As well as
indicating whether they may well be just validating your email address to the
spammer (unfortunately I find a lot do possibly by simple stupidity)

When you see a web link, track the link it takes you to, then report that
also. The first link is usually a throw away account such as a free web page,
the second or 3rd link costs them money (burns spammers better)

Take care as too not report directly to the so called posting/return address
of a Spammer, as this is usually a "JoeJob" address. But if you believe the
return address may be real, point it out to the relevant abuse desk "please
check ***@***.** dropbox. Thankyou"
