Highlights: 2010 was the strongest year of growth for open access, at least so far, with 14 measures showing growth of 30% or better!
In 2010, DOAJ added 1,401 journals for a current total of 5,936 titles, a growth rate of 4 titles per day. OpenDOAR added about one repository per day. PubMedCentral features more than 3 million free articles, a growth of 11% in 2010, and more than 1,000 journals are now voluntarily participating in PMC. A Scientific Commons search now encompasses more than 38 million publications, an increase of over 6 million in 2010.
This issue of the Dramatic Growth of Open Access includes new historical data thanks to Tim Gray of Homerton College Library and The Internet Archive's Wayback Machine, and the first edition of The Dramatic Growth of Open Access Rationale and Methodology. The Show Growth version focuses on 2010 growth, and now includes columns for average daily, weekly, and monthly growth which may be useful for illustration purposes.
