In October 2010, leaders from research libraries, foundations, and cultural
institutions gathered to discuss how to work together toward the creation of a
Digital Public Library of America (DPLA) – defined as “an open, distributed
network of comprehensive online resources that would draw on the nation’s
living heritage from libraries, universities, archives, and museums in order to
educate, inform and empower everyone in the current and future generations”
(http://cyber.law.harvard.edu/dpla/Sign_On). Convened by the Berkman Center at
Harvard University, this initial workshop has inspired a spate of interest and
activity in the library community and beyond – including an energetic
discussion on the DPLA listserv
(https://cyber.law.harvard.edu/lists/arc/dpla-discussion) – and attracted a
generous grant from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation.

On May 31, please join us as we host Dr. John Palfrey, Chair of the DPLA
Steering Committee, and Steering Committee Member Maura Marx to walk through
the basics and most recent developments with the DPLA project.
