All,

We've got a Sun Sparc 5 sitting around and we've installed Debian 2.1
(Slink)
on it. So far so good. We'd like to hook up an external modem to one
of the serial ports (back side of Sparc has two serial ports, A and B).
I've tried it but couldn't get it to work.

setserial reports an unknown uart type and on intel boxes this means
trouble so it this also true for Sparc boxes?

When the external modem is hooked up to port "A" using a straight-thru
cable
I get some lights on the modem to blink. In /dev I find ttyS0-4 and
cua0-1,
using minicom I've tried them all and they all have the same result.
When minicom sents the initialization string first the "TR" light blinks
once and then stays on and then the "TD" is blinking a couple of times.
When I tried this with port "B" I don't see any modem activity.

Some details, it is a SUN Sparcstation 5 and it is running kernel
2.0.35, the
default provided with Debian 2.1.

Any help is appreciated,

Lolke Bijlsma
