After reading quite a few of the messages in the archives I have had some luck but am still rather confused by the serial console issue using my Redhat 5.1 Sparc Classic. I changed /dev/console so that it's major and minor numbers were 5 and 1 respectively instead of 4 and 1. Someone had written that they had done that and that it worked. Upon booting, without a keyboard, it now finally showed the entire boot process not just up to the point of "freeing kernel memory". At this point I still don't get a login prompt but can login from the network. What should the major and minor numbers of /dev/console actually be? Do certain processes ever change these attributes of the dev/console device? Then, do I actually have to configure inittab to respawn getty on /dev/ttyS0 or should changing /dev/device be enough? When changing inittab to read 1:1234:respawn/sbin/getty /dev/ttyS0 9600 vt100 I then get allot or respawning errors, waiting for 5 minutes, at which point I can't even login from the network. I would really appreciate it if someone could please explain these two issues for me.
