The Faculty of History and Art Sciences of the
Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München is seeking to fill the position
of a research assistant (m/f/x, pre- or postdoc) for three years
starting June 16, 2025.
About us:
The Institute of Art History at LMU Munich is one of the largest art
historical teaching and research institutions in the German-speaking
area, covering periods from the Middle Ages to the present. Research
focuses include European, North American, and Islamic art, as well as
questions of their global interconnections. The Institute hosts several
major third-party funded projects. It cooperates closely with the
Central Institute for Art History Munich and other art and cultural
institutions in Munich and beyond.
The DFG-funded project (PI: Prof. Dr. Joanna Olchawa) is dedicated, on
the one hand, to the study of European pulpits in the triadic
understanding of seeing, hearing, and speaking, and on the other hand,
aims to establish a new methodological approach, a 'Sound Art History'.
This includes analyses of audiovisual interdependencies, as well as
medialization strategies of the voice and other sounds (including music,
noises, signals). This art historical approach should—beyond pulpits—be
opened up for other applications and groups of works, and increase the
visibility of art historical research within interdisciplinary Sound
History / Sound Studies.
Your tasks:
We are seeking (preferably starting June 16, 2025) a doctoral candidate
or postdoc (m/f/x) specializing in medieval art to collaborate in this
DFG research project. The position holder will conduct their own
research on the sonic dimensions of medieval art and work within the
framework of their own academic qualification. This research can address
all areas (including digital art history) as well as different genres
and research questions.
Your profile:
Requirements include a completed university degree (MA) in art history,
outstanding scientific potential, high communicative and social
competencies, as well as organizational and teamwork skills.
