If you're on Solaris, try "man logadm" to get an idea how to rotate logs with out of the box tools. It's quite flexible and does everything I need, including keeping n historic versions of a log of which (n-2) are gzip'ped and stuff like that. root's crontab has a logadm launch per default everyday at 1.13 pm, AFAIR.
