Hi Brad, Yes, in NCM devices are grouped by device families. But, no - you can't define a TFTP account per device family. For one because TFTP does not have accounts. It uses more or less a "security by obscurity" approach. And the other part of the answer is: You can define 1 TFTP server per landscape and that's it. However, this is only true for the default families - for custom families you can define whatever you want.. A custom device family is like a global collection, you can group together whatever you want by defining the search criteria or even add devices manually. Of course it makes sense to add devices using the same communication method and the same credentials (if credentials are necessary) as you can define credential on a family. However you can specify (and override) the credentials on a per device base (in OC: Component Detail/Network Configuration Manager/Local Communication Configuration; Attributes: NCM_...) The drawback is, that you need to create scripts to let the custom families do anything. But once you are familiar with NCM and scripting you can do almost everything. We have families using SNMP/TFTP, telnet or ssh and TFTP or CLI e.g. with "sh run", for devices behind an SDC, for unix hosts and more.
One thing CA needs to work on (Sorry Guys! :o) ) - you can't use the device's attributes in the script. That makes life harder e.g. if you want to use SNMP and need value of the ro and rw community string attributes configured on the device model. Hope that answers your question without creating to many new questions! I understand that by default the device models are grouped by Device Family Types, where you can define the TFTP account (username/password) you want Spectrum to use. Is there any other way to group devices? The reason I ask is we have a distributed Spectrum environment monitoring server customer networks, and not all customer networks use the same TFTP credentials. Therefore we have a need to define more than one TFTP account per Device Family. Or perhaps a better method would be to define a TFTP account per individual device model; does anyone know if that is possible?
