I thought the section about mental preferences was really interesting. The fact that rock is seen as more aggressive and paper as more passive.
Unless you were really good at reading your opponent, or knew their history, I imagine it is mostly random chance, but maybe more like this: rock 40% scissors 36% paper 24% or something like that. So maybe it isn't 1/3 odds across the board, but more weighted to your preferences to the throws under pressure.
